The Victorian International Student Sports Festival (VISSF) returned for its second year, bringing vibrant culture and energetic competition to life at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre last Saturday. The festival welcomed 470 international students from 26 nations and 12 universities for an action-packed day of badminton, basketball, and table tennis.
Hosted by UniSport Australia in collaboration with the Perfect Ballers Association (PBA), the event was designed to foster an inclusive and engaging space where students could connect through sport. Running from 9am to 5pm, the festival was entirely free for international students, with complimentary meals served throughout the day.
The heart of VISSF extended far beyond the courts, it was found in the connections made, laughter shared, and the deep sense of community experienced by students, many of whom are just beginning their journey in Australia.
Thanks to the strong volunteer support from the Deakin International Students Club and the organisational expertise of the PBA, known for their work in Melbourne’s multicultural basketball scene, the event was well-executed and had a student-centred energy throughout.
Leading university representation: University of Melbourne (191), Monash (65), Deakin (59), RMIT (40)
Top nationalities: China (244), Vietnam (33), Malaysia (27), India (20)
Badminton emerged as the most popular sport of the day, attracting 221 participants who rotated through four separate two-hour sessions. Due to high demand, students signed up for a single session and enjoyed spirited, informal games with fellow attendees.
Table Tennis offered a more relaxed experience, with 30 students dropping in for casual matches that encouraged longer playing time and social interaction.
On the basketball courts, the 3×3 competition brought intensity and excitement:
45 men’s teams and 5 women’s teams took part
Men’s division was divided into 16 pools of three, leading into a 48-team knockout round
The Melbourne Basketball Bears claimed victory in the men’s final, defeating Crazy Ziyou
In the women’s division, Team Hahahaha triumphed over the Airballers
Trophies and medals were awarded during a closing ceremony that marked the end of a day filled with passion, camaraderie, and cultural pride.
VISSF is more than a sporting event, it’s a platform for connection, storytelling, and inclusion. It reflects the broader Australian community and offers international students a sense of belonging in their new environment.
“We understand the challenges faced by international students—adapting to a new culture, overcoming language barriers, managing financial stress, and dealing with the isolation of limited support networks,” said Shane Cantelmi, General Manager of Member Services at UniSport. “Sport provides a powerful pathway to overcome these barriers by building connections, improving mental wellbeing, enhancing communication skills, and boosting confidence.”
Cantelmi also noted the importance of the event being free of charge: “VISSF eliminates financial obstacles, opening the door for more international students to experience the many benefits that sport can provide.”
After launching with a pilot in September 2024 that attracted over 150 students, this year’s edition more than tripled in size, highlighting the growing impact and relevance of initiatives like VISSF in creating inclusive, supportive spaces for international students. With positive feedback still pouring in, UniSport Australia and PBA are already planning for what’s to come next.
