UNE Building a Healthier Campus Community

The University of New England (UNE) is proudly leading the way as a FISU Healthy Campus signatory in Australia, demonstrating its commitment to creating a healthier, more connected community for both students and staff.

While the journey is still evolving, UNE has already made a strong impact through initiatives that focus on social and mental wellbeing. Recognising that physical activity can also foster connection and inclusion, UNE has developed three programs designed to get people moving, socialising, and engaging with life on campus.

Healthy Campus Lunchtime Walks

Held on the first Wednesday of every month, the Lunchtime Walk is a simple but effective way to bring staff and students together. Covering a 1.5km loop around campus, the walk is accessible to all abilities and participants are rewarded with a café voucher to encourage healthy routines.

UNE Social Running Group

Born out of the success of the Lunchtime Walk, the Social Running Group has become a highlight for staff and students alike. Sessions are held once a week during winter and twice a week in summer, catering to all fitness levels, from beginners to experienced runners. The group is proudly inclusive and non-competitive, with staff members volunteering their time to lead runs. Beyond campus, the group has taken participants to Sydney’s iconic City2Surf for the past two years, an achievement that has built camaraderie and showcased UNE’s active spirit.

Pickleball on Campus

Capitalising on the sport’s growing popularity, UNE introduced indoor pickleball competitions as part of its Healthy Campus programming. Offered at lunchtime in six-week blocks, with both social and competitive divisions, pickleball has quickly become a favourite. Most competitions have been fully subscribed, with low participation costs ensuring accessibility and helping to cover equipment needs.

UNE recognises that there is still work to do, particularly in engaging students more directly and embedding Healthy Campus into the broader culture of the university. Plans for the future include strengthening collaboration across departments, establishing a program steering committee, and working with student leaders to co-design initiatives that resonate.

Most importantly, UNE is committed to securing long-term funding for Healthy Campus, ensuring that its value is recognised and sustained into the future. By building on its early successes, UNE is well-positioned to continue enhancing the health, wellbeing, and sense of belonging of everyone in its community.

The FISU Healthy Campus Program, developed in 2020 and endorsed by UNESCO and ISO, is a global certification initiative promoting health, wellbeing, and sustainability, helping universities embed supportive programs into all aspects of student and staff life while encouraging collaboration across campus communities. UniSport Australia partners with FISU to support its members in delivering Healthy Campus initiatives, providing tools, guidance, networks, and evidence-based resources that foster physical activity, mental health, nutrition, and a culture of wellbeing. With 14 Australian universities currently signed on, the program demonstrates global leadership and offers recognition for institutions advancing healthier, more sustainable, and connected campus communities.
