thrive*: Building a Culture of Belonging, Wellbeing and Fun

Victoria University understands that success is about more than grades, deadlines, or career milestones. It is about feeling connected, supported, and inspired to grow – personally, socially, and professionally. That’s why in 2024, thrive* was launched: a holistic, people-centred program designed to enrich the university experience for every student and staff member.

Why thrive*?

The vision for thrive* had been in the making for many years. In the aftermath of COVID-19 lockdowns, it became clear that many in our community were grappling with isolation, stress, and disconnection. We recognised the need to reimagine what a vibrant, inclusive campus culture could look like – one that prioritises wellbeing, connection, and belonging as foundations for success. This is when thrive* emerged as a real opportunity to respond to these significant shifts in how we related to each other, and to ourselves.
thrive* is built on the belief that University life is more than the pursuit of academic and professional excellence. It’s a time for discovery, creativity, and community. By offering diverse, accessible opportunities to engage, thrive* empowers people to forge meaningful relationships, explore new interests, and rediscover joy in shared experiences.

What Is thrive*?

thrive* weaves together initiatives and activities across areas such as Active Living, Creativity and Play, Engagement and Collaboration, Social Connection and Mental and Physical Wellbeing. Whether it’s a group exercise session, a shared lunch, or a creative workshop, thrive* ensures there is something for everyone – no matter their background, interests, or comfort level.

Clear Objectives, Real Impact

From the outset, thrive* set out to achieve 6 core objectives – 1. Enhance Wellbeing, 2. Foster Belonging and Connection, 3. Drive Inclusive Engagement – One VU, 4. Support Academic and Professional Success Through Life Balance, 5. Encourage University-Wide Collaboration, 6. Evaluate, Evolve, and Expand. These objectives shape every aspect of thrive, from strategy to delivery, ensuring a clear focus on both individual wellbeing and collective community building. The strategy behind thrive was simple but ambitious: create a connected, vibrant campus culture that feels welcoming to all. Recognising that many people feel hesitant or unsure about joining in, thrive* was designed with approachable entry points and flexible participation. This gently encourages engagement, builds trust, and helps people step out of their comfort zones at their own pace.

One of thrive*’s defining features is its commitment to co-design and collaboration. Students and staff are not just participants—they are active contributors. Anyone can propose an idea for an activity, and the thrive team works alongside them to bring it to life. This shared ownership has been critical in ensuring relevance and cultivating a sense of belonging.

The program officially launched in March 2024 for staff and in April for students, led by VU Sport and Health (the University Delivery Agent) and supported by Student Life, People and Culture, the External Relations and Major Partnerships Portfolio and a wide range of other departments and services. From day one, it was clear that thrive* struck a chord across the University.

Participation Beyond Expectations

In its first year, thrive* set an ambitious goal: to engage 2,000 students and 800 staff. The response surpassed all expectations, and by the end of 2024, 4,650 unique participants – 3,077 students and 1,573 staff – had taken part. Momentum only accelerated in 2025, with the first six months surpassing the previous year’s total. From March 2024 to June 2025, thrive* has reached 7,950+ individuals.
This extraordinary participation reflects a deep appetite for experiences that prioritise connection, wellbeing, and community spirit.

Celebrating Connection: One T-Shirt at a Time

A small but powerful symbol of thrive* is the thrive t-shirt. Every participant receives one and over time these shirts have become a visible badge of belonging. From first-year students to the Vice-Chancellor, people wear them proudly across campuses, sparking greetings, waves, and spontaneous conversations. It is a simple gesture that has helped transform the culture of our university, making connection visible and celebrated.

Measurable Positive Impact

According to our annual participant survey, thrive* has made a tangible difference in people’s lives. On a scale of 1 (no increase) to 5 (significant increase), participants reported on average:

  • Enhanced happiness: 4.30
  • Improved mental wellbeing: 4.31
  • Improved physical wellbeing: 4.00

The program itself received an outstanding average satisfaction rating of 4.42 out of 5, underscoring its effectiveness in delivering meaningful, enjoyable experiences.

What’s Next?

Building on its success, thrive* is doubling its engagement targets for 2025 and broadening its reach across programs, campuses, and online platforms. By weaving wellbeing and connection into everything from pre-commencement programs to recruitment initiatives, thrive* is no longer a standalone offering—it is becoming part of the fabric and culture of the VU experience.

A Transformative Legacy

thrive* has proven that when innovation, collaboration, and genuine care come together, it’s possible to create a community where everyone can flourish. Thousands of students and staff have already experienced its benefits, and with continued commitment, thrive* will help ensure that at Victoria University, everyone has the opportunity—and the support—to truly thrive.
