La Trobe University was awarded Platinum level accreditation in the FISU Healthy Campus program.

In June 2024, La Trobe University was awarded Platinum level accreditation in the FISU Healthy Campus program.

La Trobe University’s initial attraction to the FISU Healthy Campus program was to support and document the activities that the university is already undertaking in providing a safe, inclusive and inviting environment for students. La Trobe specialises in health and sport related courses and has a mission to make a positive difference to the community through sport.

Nick Lambert, Senior Manager, La Trobe Sport said that the Healthy Campus program’s objective of improving health and well-being on campus aligns very well with La Trobe’s strategic objectives.

‘Being a signatory provides us some credibility and the opportunity to provide evidence that we are taking action in the areas of physical activity and the overall health and wellbeing of staff and students.  We have evidence to support that students who participate in the programs that La Trobe Sport are delivering perform better at University and being a signatory shows that this is valued throughout the entire institution’ said Mr Lambert.

Mr Lambert said that the University’s experience with signing up and completing the certification process was straightforward and that the feedback received was timely and succinct.

‘What surprised us was the level of recognition and interest the certification has received through various areas of our University, something that definitely encourages us to seek to achieve the next level,’ Mr Lambert said. ‘We’ve received extremely positive feedback from staff, many of whom were unaware of the accreditation and have been prompted to become part of working groups and assist the program being led by La Trobe Sport to achieve the next level of accreditation.’

Positive feedback and promotion of the University’s achievement in the Healthy Campus program was received from La Trobe’s Vice Chancellor, helping to reinforce this accreditation as a priority for the University.

Mr Lambert said La Trobe was looking forward to the opportunity to collaborate more with other Universities through the program. La Trobe University is rated as leading in many criteria but Mr Lambert feels they could learn from others in the sector in areas where they would like to improve their rating and performance.

‘For us, Healthy Campus is a natural extension of what we consider to be a basic expectation of the campus life students can expect at La Trobe’ he said.

Mr Lambert said Health Campus has been supported significantly by the University, allowing La Trobe Sport to bring together groups of experts in areas such as sustainability and nutrition and collate a lot of the activities and programs they are already providing to staff and students in a centralised location.

‘Physical activity, health and wellbeing of the community is something that is taken extremely seriously at La Trobe, and this has become one tool of many to identify, track and promote the activities which we are undertaking at La Trobe.’
